Database search

Database help and tips

Tips

  • If you search on a full name and do not receive any results, try entering the surname only.
  • Special characters have been removed, so avoid them in your search.

Notes

  • These databases are continuously updated by the Museum researchers.
  • The data is in Afrikaans (except the ‘Foreign Volunteers’).

You can browse any of our 15 databases. Just click on the database you would like to explore – the page will refresh with the records of that database. In the below example, you would be viewing the Prisoners of War records.

While you are browsing, each database tab shows how many records there are in the database.

This search page shows a summary view of the record. To access the full record, click on the “Read More” button.

To keep browsing more records beyond the first page, click on the page numbers or “Next” at the bottom of the page.

To perform a keyword search, enter your keyword(s) in the search bar, e.g. “Kruger” and wait for the page to load. You don’t have to click a search button or press Enter to perform the search.

Every database tab will show an updated record count that reflects the amount of search relevant records in that database. The below example shows search results for “Kruger”.

Once the search is performed, you can click on any database to see the records related to your search for that database.

If your search term does not show up in the summary view (the two or three columns displayed on this page), that term might be in another field in the full record. Click on “Read More” to see the full record.

The below example shows a full record.
