The War Museum strives to make its unique collection digitally available to the general public as well as for academic and commercial purposes. This service is provided at a predetermined fee to fund the conservation of the original items as well as for future digitization projects.

This pilot project includes approximately 38 000 images from our document and photograph collection.

Public domain images may be downloaded from the relevant page. These JPEG images are lower resolution images under 1 MB.

We are also embarking on a project to digitize the rest of the collection with scanners funded by the National Lotteries Commission. Images are uploaded on a continual basis. Images that are not yet digitally available may be provided at an additional fee, only if the time and human resources are available to do so.

When using the images for personal or academic purposes please always acknowledge the source (War Museum, Bloemfontein) with the relevant accession number indicated. We would also like to receive a copy of your research output such as the intended article, thesis etc. for our Library Collection.

For enquiries regarding the digitization project please contact the Collections Manager: francis@anglo-boer.co.za

  • Please note that the search terms are in Afrikaans only. Try to search for surnames, battles, concentration camps, prisoner-of-war camps etc. For example: ‘Kruger’ or ‘Magersfontein’ or ‘Bethulie’.
  • Most of the documents are also in Dutch or Afrikaans.
