Violence against women and children has been a scourge that has plagued human kind for centuries. When looking back in history, the evidence is plain to see. During the Anglo-Boer (South African) War of 1899-1902, violence against women and children could be seen during the scorched-earth and concentration camp systems where black and white women and children were not always treated in a humane way. Rape, violence and exploitation were part of some women and children’s experiences during the war.
In 2020, unfortunately the picture does not look that much different. Rape, violence and exploitation are still part of some women and children’s daily lives. In South Africa, gender-based violence and femicide is a daily occurrence and are constantly in the news. The only solution for this problem is if we speak out against gender-based violence and femicide.
